Hacked

Sheesh, not only did he hack my computer, he staged a lookout.

You just can't trust anyone these days.

P.S. And no, they are NOT allowed on the table. Evil beasts.

1st Day of Fall - A Week Late

I promise I took this picture last week on the actual first day of fall, but due to unforeseen circumstances (a.k.a. LIFE) I didn't upload the photos until last night.

The leaves on this tree have changed quite a bit since this photo was taken, but this morning when I went to take a new photo, it was foggy and drizzly outside. This afternoon when it was sunny, I wasn't home. And now it's dark.

I'd promise a photo tomorrow, but we have tropical rain headed our way. Nothing says "goodbye September" in Maine like rain, humidity, and temperatures in the 70s.

Ok, not really. But at least it isn't snow. Yet.

Anyway, THIS is what the leaves looked like last week. And I do promise to take more updated photos on Saturday - the next decent day in the forecast. And I always keep my promises. Mostly.

11:09

That's what time fall arrives tonight. 11:09 p.m.

That means we have about an hour and a half of summer left.

What will you do with the rest of your summer of 2010? :)

Or probably a better question, what are your plans for fall?

The leaves are starting to change here in Maine. Pumpkins are everywhere, school buses can be seen each weekday afternoon, and cider, tea and cocoa is quickly replacing lemonade and iced tea.

Now begins the rush to stack the wood, winterize the house (and car), prep the garden, prep the snow blower, and rake the leaves... all before the first snowfall. And no, the snow probably won't be here for another couple of months at least. But it WILL be here.

No getting around that, I guarantee it.

Late Summer Saturday

Apples, pumpkins, long shadows, not a cloud in the late afternoon sky...

Nuff said.

Smile

This little beauty is thanks to my creative husband.

Besides, what reason would we have NOT to smile? We're in Maine. And in spite of what the calendar might say, fall is here. It blew in on Friday and we caved in and turned our heater on for a little while today.

My son calls every day from Arizona, where it's still in the 90s each day. I thought I'd be jealous, and I'm sure I will be - in January. But right now, it feels good to put on a pair of jeans and a sweatshirt.

It feels RIGHT.

Ok... if you want the REAL story, yesterday I got just a little bit bummed that summer is over in Maine. I like fall, but fall means winter is coming, and winter is LOOONNNNGGG. So my sunflower-smiling-husband told me not to think about it. He said I should forget about winter and just remember all the things I love about fall.

So that's what I'm doing. I baked a pie, made spaghetti, put on my sweatshirt and now we're watching football.

So... smile with me, K? :)

Remembering

It has been a beautiful September day, very much like this date nine years ago. It is eerily peaceful, clear, crisp and quiet. Much like that day.

This morning we watched the 9/11 commemoration at Shanksville, PA, where both Laura Bush and Michelle Obama spoke. Both women were equally impressive, kind, and non-political, which was refreshing and appropriate. It was a lovely ceremony, though still so very sad.

This afternoon, with nothing planned, we drove to our favorite apple orchard and now there's a pie baking in the oven.

It feels like fall. And I like it very much.

Last Summer Days

My kids started school last week, but the day before school started, we went to the waterpark for one last hurrah.

I'm just now putting up photos because I'm still behind. In fact, after leaving town for a month on July 17, and then being gone off and on until two weeks ago, I just now TODAY finally cleaned the house. Yeah. Gross.

Ok, we had cleaned it SOMEWHAT before today, but not all at once. And not REALLY clean.

But you don't care about that. The waterpark - that was a fun day.

I had planned to take a photo of the kids on the first day of school, but I forgot to do it. So I told them we'd take it on the second day. I forgot to do it that day, too.

School has now been in session for a week and still no photo. Maybe I'll take one tomorrow morning. But let's face it, probably not.
