Dinner will be ready when...

... the smoke alarm goes off.

Ever heard that one?

We did. Literally and figuratively.

It was one of those moments that was surreal. We were all seating ourselves around the table for Thanksgiving. Thankfully, we have a country kitchen, so our table is in full view of any cooking going on.

Thankfully because, as we were getting seated and my husband was carving the ham (yes, you read that right - we do ham on Thanksgiving, not turkey), my daughter said, "Is that supposed to be on fire?"

We looked at her. She was looking at the oven. Suspiciously. We could see past the glass that, indeed, there were flames.

I had put the sweet potato casserole (topped with marshmallows) on broil. I was only going to leave it in for like, 30 seconds, but... yeah. I forgot about it.

So as we opened the oven, smoke billowed out and we all saw the blackened marshmallows.

"Oh no!" I said, "Do you think it can be sav--"

"NO," said my husband. Don't even go there."

And at about that time, the smoke alarm down the hall went off. Understand we have the Queen Mother of all smoke alarms. It was here when we moved in - hard wired into the house. Suffice it to say, it is DAMN loud.

The noise was deafening, the cats scattered, and we flipped out, trying to stop the smoke AND the alarm at the same time. Chaos ensued.

My husband took the former casserole out into the garage and put it on a flattened pizza box. This photo makes it look silver, but you get the idea.


Thankfully, I had bought two of everything because I really wasn't sure how much to make, so we whipped together another casserole and delayed dinner by only about 15 minutes.

And of all the times we've tested our smoke alarm, I've truly wondered if it really worked. You know, does it only make that horrid screech when we push the button, or will it let us know if the house ever goes up in flames?

Now we know. And yay for that!

It's almost kind of pretty, though I doubt I'd be tempted to eat it in that condition.
